As every new year comes around, most of us usually self-reflect on the prior year and make intentional decisions to improve both physically and mentally. We adjust our attitudes, change bad habits, establish better fitness routines, boost certain relationships, or stop specific behaviors, both personally and professionally.
But what about our Spiritual resolutions? Do you think about this when January comes around? So, how is your faith? Do you have habits in place that allow for the growth of your spiritual life? Just like most things in our lives, if we don’t nurture our relationship with God, it can fall by the wayside or become stagnant. I’m sure we all want to have that close and meaningful relationship with Him and allow our faith to grow with each passing year, but for this to occur, we need to find ways to challenge our spiritual lives in new ways. This may involve stepping out of our comfort zone to listen and understand how God might be leading us.
“Be transformed by renewing your mind so that you can discern what is good and acceptable in the eyes of God.” Romans 12:2
But remember, we need to take time to give these resolutions or goals some thought. How can we position ourselves within our faith community to make these goals attainable? It’s important to take the time to pray over your plans, to commit them to God, to your spiritual growth, and to do your best to align them with God’s will for your life.
“But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” Luke 8:15
What will you do with your mustard seed? How big will your crop be?
When deciding our resolutions, we’re talking about being intentional in how we live our lives, but what does that look like? What are some spiritual resolutions you might make? Below are some ideas to consider.
- Formulate a plan to re-read the Bible. Set aside some time to read a chapter or two every day or follow another pre-set plan. Pick a topic you want to learn more about and dive in.
- Prioritize a time for meditation, devotions, and reflection each day.
- Set aside time for prayer. Prayer can be so powerful, and what a great way to start or end the day.
- Start a gratitude jar or prayer journal for yourself or your family.
- Join a new class or Bible Study at the church. This is a great way to learn more and gain some new friends as well. Learn about new classes starting in January HERE.
- Resolve to attend church more often and connect with people in your church family. Bring a friend, neighbor, or co-worker with you!
- Volunteer with any of St. Luke’s ministries that align with your passions (Children, Youth, Missions, or Care). Be the person who influences another by your actions.
- Connect and find ways to serve the underprivileged, work in the community for those in need, or fight for injustice.
For a better version of ourselves, we should focus on all aspects of our lives, including our body and mind, but not forgetting our SOUL! How will you reshape your resolutions and goals for this coming year?
