Sleep in Heavenly Peace Build Day

May 3, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Please join us in celebrating Missions’ new partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP)!

As part of our Restoring Hope, we are so excited that Sleep in Heavenly Peace fits well with our commitment to sustainable and dignified housing to our neighbors.

Close to 800,000 children in the U.S. don’t have a bed. These children end up sleeping on floors – sometimes without a mattress. A bed is a basic need for the physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing of a child.   SHP is a national organization answering the call to a national problem. They partner with organizations to build, assemble, and deliver top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need. NO KID SLEEPS ON THE FLOOR IN OUR TOWN!®

At our September Bed Build – we had 180 volunteers who built 57 beds

Our next Bed Build day is coming up on
Saturday, May 3, 2025 where we will  build 60 beds.

Date: Saturday, May 3, 2025

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (An earlier Pre-Build shift is also available from 7:30  a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and a Post-Build shift from 1:00-3:00 pm)

Location: St. Luke’s front UMC parking lot

Kathy Haworth’s Reflection

When I moved to Central Florida in the Fall of 2023, I was feeling very alone, and looking for places to plug in. Thankfully, the St Luke’s community surrounded me with much love and support. I still felt something was missing. I didn’t want all of my activities to be “me focused”, so I sought opportunities to serve others in ways that made sense to me and where I could use my gifts. There was a Sleep in Heavenly Peace bed build event sponsored by St. Luke’s in November of that year, and I showed up. I was a bit nervous, knowing very few people and not certain what I was volunteering for exactly, but I had a strong feeling that this would be a great ministry for me to try. It turned out to be one of the best decisions that I have ever made. There are too many kids who sleep on the floor or a couch or with other family members in our community (and Nationwide). The whole idea of helping these children have a bed and space of their own really spoke to me. I was able to use my time and talents to make a very tangible difference in a kid’s life! I found the build that day to be very rewarding, and volunteered to help deliver beds with SHP the second Saturday in December. It was that day that I was hooked. The children at the home my team delivered beds to were so excited to each have a bed of their own! Two of the small ones asked to help build their own bed, and my team leader was able to accommodate that and help them screw in the screws that hold the headboard and footboard to the side rails. These kids were excited and proud to be building their own new bed! For me this was the start of being all in to help Sleep in Heavenly Peace thrive in Central Florida. I am now on our local core leadership team and excited to help spread the word at St Luke’s that we can make a difference. Hopefully I can plant some seeds to inspire others to get involved on a regular basis. There are so many diverse ways that people can help! Please don’t hesitate to ask how you can use your gifts to support SHP. There is so much need – currently over 800 kids on the waiting list for a bed in Central Florida. We CAN make a difference so that “No kid sleeps on the floor in my town”.
