Hear from St. Luker Dorathy Nevitt about her experience volunteering with Jobs Partnership
Helping our neighbors through Jobs Partnership is a little bit like helping those individual starfish. This impactful ministry supports individuals who have struggled with either under or unemployment. The 12-week long Life Works program utilizes biblical principals and current industry practices coupled with technology to develop and skills and abilities to be successful in today’s job market. A combination of class instruction, discussion and “homework” guided by class leadership and coaches (mentors) provides a foundation for future success in the workplace.
Volunteers are needed to be class coaches, interview and resume coaches, class instructors:
Class Coaches: A 12 week commitment to walk beside the Jobs Partnership student as they complete the course. Attend class each week and provide support and encouragement to assigned students. Provide encouragement and support outside of class hours as needed. This requires the biggest commitment … but provides the greatest sense of satisfaction for you!
Resume Coaches: Assist individuals in developing a professional and appropriate resume. This work is generally done virtually and requires a limited time commitment.
Interview Coaches: A one-time commitment to conduct “practice interviews” for students and then give them feedback.
Instructors: Subject matter experts are needed to deliver prescribed content lessons per JP guidelines. This is generally a one-time commitment.
Employers: Are you in a position to make hiring decisions or referrals for your employer? JP works with students at the conclusion of the class with their job search and even holds an exclusive career fair for graduates. Can you or someone from your organization be a part of this?
Classes are held in local churches and schools and there is one class that is held virtually. Opportunities are available Tuesday morning and evening and Thursday evening. Training is provided for all volunteer roles.
I first became involved with Jobs Partnership through my employer and have volunteered in multiple roles over the last 20 years. I am proud of the commitment that St. Luke’s made to Jobs Partnership many years ago and have continued to volunteer even after retirement.
When watching the news each day, regardless of your leanings and beliefs, we can all agree there are many problems out there and it is easy to feel helpless and that you cannot have an impact. Think of the man on the beach…. picking up one Starfish at a time and making a difference. YOU CAN make a difference to one neighbor by volunteering for Jobs Partnership.
