As someone of African American, Native American, and Puerto Rican descent, I find Hispanic Heritage Month to be an incredible opportunity to celebrate the diversity that makes our country truly unique. For me, this month serves as a reminder of the beauty and strength found in the many cultures that have come together to shape the United States. It is a chance to reflect on the significant contributions Hispanic Americans have made—and continue to make—throughout history.
In my own life, I celebrate by honoring the legacy of my Puerto Rican ancestors. I love attending local festivals that showcase Latin heritage and food, and I make it a point to connect with my roots by trying out new Puerto Rican recipes. My grandfather, who has a wealth of traditional Puerto Rican recipes, has been somewhat elusive in sharing them with me, but I’m determined to bring those flavors into my own kitchen. Cooking and sharing those meals feels like a connection to my heritage, my family, and a larger story that continues to unfold.
My journey to St. Luke’s wasn’t without its challenges. As a member of a same-sex couple, my husband and I spent a lot of time searching for a church that wouldn’t just tolerate us, but truly welcome us as part of the family. After visiting several churches, we found St. Luke’s, where we immediately felt the love, acceptance, and unity we had been seeking. St. Luke’s isn’t just a church that preaches inclusivity; it lives and breathes it. The diversity of cultures and backgrounds all coming together under one roof, united in Christ’s love, made us feel at home.
We began volunteering because we wanted to dive in fully and contribute to a place that had already given us so much. Through service, we found community and a sense of belonging that has only deepened our connection to the church.
My Hispanic heritage has deeply influenced my faith and involvement at St. Luke’s. Growing up, my grandfather instilled in me the values of hard work and dedication. These are values I’ve carried with me, and when I walk through the doors of St. Luke’s, I bring those values with me. The church’s celebration of diverse cultures, from bilingual worship services to the incorporation of Latin music and cuisine, speaks to my heart. It’s a powerful reminder that St. Luke’s is a place where all of me—my heritage, my faith, and my identity—are welcomed and celebrated.
For me, St. Luke’s embodies what heaven will be like: a place where people of all backgrounds come together in love and unity. This church is more than just a place of worship; it’s a family that truly reflects the richness and diversity of God’s kingdom.
